A Pakistan T20 World Cup squad member was reportedly slapped with a fine for misbehaving with a female hotel staff member in Kandy, Sri Lanka, reported Telecom Asia Sport. The unnamed Pakistan player faced the heat for reportedly misbehaving with a female hotel staff member during the team's stay before the Final Super Eight fixture against Lanka. Since then, the controversy has been discussed in Pakistan cricket circles.

Pakistan player under fire

The report stated that the episode happened at the Golden Crown Hotel in Kandy, where Pakistan's squad was staying during the tournament. “Before Pakistan’s last Super Eight match against Sri Lanka, a Pakistan World Cup squad player misbehaved with a female housekeeping staff,” Telecom Asia Sport reported, citing sources. The report added that the staff member “shouted and called for help, after which hotel staff came for her rescue and reported the matter to Pakistan team manager Naveed Cheema.”

"The top management of Golden Crown Hotel wanted the matter to be dealt with strongly, but Cheema apologised on behalf of the player and fined him for misbehaviour," said Telecom Asia Sport in the report.

According to senior officials at the Golden Crown Hotel, they reportedly called for strict action against the player. However, Naveed Cheema intervened and apologised to the hotel management on the cricketer’s behalf. He also imposed a fine for the misconduct, which helped resolve the issue internally at the time.

Although the player’s identity has not been disclosed, the matter is not entirely over, and the individual is likely to face further scrutiny after returning home.

Player to be summoned

Reports suggest that the player is also likely to appear before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) disciplinary committee and is likely to be punished further. The controversy surfaced soon after Pakistan’s disappointing campaign, where the side failed to reach the semifinals after missing out on net run-rate despite defeating Sri Lanka by five runs in their final Super Eight match.

The report said that Pakistani players and backroom staff have a history of misconduct on tours.

Young batter Haider Ali was arrested by Manchester Police last year on charges of raping a girl on Pakistan Shaheens tour of England. Haider appeared before a court but was released due to lack of evidence, the report claimed. Pakistan team masseur Malang Ali was also reported and fined for misbehaviour with a female staff member on tour of Malaysia a few years ago.
