Padma Bhushan for Sudha Murthy, Kumar Birla; Rakesh Jhunjhunwala to get Padma Shri posthumously

On the occasion of the 74th Republic Day, the Indian Government bestowed the Padma awards on various prominent individuals. Padma Bhushan recipients include noted entrepreneur Kumara Mangalam Birla, author S L Bhyrappa, and Sudha Murthy.
Birla received the prize in the 'Trade & Industry' category, while Murthy received it in the 'Social Work' category.

The late Rakesh Radheshyam Jhunjhunwala has been posthumously recognised with the Padma Shri, India's third-highest civilian honour, for his services to the sphere of 'trade and industry'.


Jhunjhunwala was regarded by investors as India's Warren Buffet. On August 14, last year, he died in Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital from a variety of diseases, including renal failure.

As a partner in his asset management firm, Rare Enterprises, the self-made business entrepreneur, who felt that risk was the meaning of life and that without it, one was nothing, handled his own portfolio.

Jhunjhunwala has also dabbled with aviation, launching Akasa Air last year on August 7. In addition to being an investor, Jhunjhunwala served as the chairman of Aptech Limited and Hungama Digital Media Entertainment Pvt Ltd. He has served on the boards of several Indian corporations. He also advised India's International Movement to the United Nations.

The President has authorised the presentation of 106 Padma Awards in 2023, including three pair instances. There are six Padma Vibhushans, nine Padma Bhushans, and 91 Padma Shri on the list. The list includes 19 female winners, 2 foreigners, NRI, PIO, OCI, and 7 posthumous recipients.

Padma Vibhushan honorees include late Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, S M Krishna, and Ustad Zakir Hussain, a drummer. This year's Padma Vibhushan awardees are Balkrishna Doshi, Srinivas Vardhan, and Dilip Mahalanabis.

The awards are presented on India's Republic Day and are regarded as among the greatest accolades that can be given to an individual in India.
