A newly surfaced artificial intelligence model called Ox Alpha is drawing attention from developers after becoming available for free online without any clear information about who created it.

Ox Alpha appeared last week on AI marketplace OpenRouter under the name “stealth model”. OpenRouter says the system has a context window of about 1 million tokens and can handle text, image and video inputs.

The anonymous release has prompted speculation within the developer community about the model’s origins, with some guesses pointing towards China as several Chinese companies continue to introduce increasingly capable AI systems.

Developers speculate over Ox Alpha’s creator

The identity of the team or company behind Ox Alpha remains unknown, turning its arrival into a guessing game among AI developers.

Some speculation has linked the model to China, where recent releases have included Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and newer models from Alibaba.

The uncertainty surrounding Ox Alpha also comes as several technology companies have released AI models without immediately disclosing their involvement. Companies including ByteDance, Sea and Alibaba have taken this approach this year.

Keeping the creators anonymous initially could allow companies to assess how users respond to new products or experiments before publicly associating their names with them.

Free access fuels experimentation

Ox Alpha has been offered free with near-unlimited usage for a week, according to OpenCode, encouraging developers to experiment with the model.

The unusual availability has helped generate interest across online developer communities, with users posting their impressions and tests on platforms including YouTube and Reddit.

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison also weighed in on X, describing the model as “very impressive”.
