Maharashtra groom insures 3,000+ villagers with ₹34.6 crore cover, says "our joy must go beyond home"

A wedding in Maharashtra’s Bahadarpura had all the hallmarks of a grand celebration—garlands, brass bands, music, and a lavish feast. But what followed the ceremonies left the entire village surprised.

Instead of traditional return gifts, groom Siddheshwar Pethkar and his family announced accident insurance coverage worth ₹34.6 crore for all 3,465 residents of the village, according to Times of India. The gesture took place in Kandhar taluka, about 55 km from Nanded in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region. The groom's act is earning widespread praise online and people are appreciating him for his thoughtful act.

Insurance cover for every eligible villager

The Pethkar family purchased a group accident insurance policy in the name of the local gram panchayat. To make the process easier and to ensure nobody was excluded, the family submitted the village voters’ list directly to the insurance company.


As a result, every eligible resident automatically received accident coverage of Rs 1 lakh without complicated paperwork or discrimination. The insurance policy will remain valid for one year, while discussions around future renewal are expected later. The family, however, has chosen not to disclose the total premium amount paid for the policy.

“In our culture, charity is not announced from rooftops,” Siddheshwar said. “We aren’t looking for applause. Blessings are enough.”

A gift inspired by the realities of village life

According to the family, the idea came from witnessing how sudden accidents often devastate rural families financially. In many villages across the region, snake bites, lightning strikes and farm-related accidents are common, while insurance coverage remains rare.

“Our joy had to travel beyond our home,” Siddheshwar’s elder brother Anup Pethkar told Times of India. “Villages around Nanded see accidental deaths far too often. We wanted this wedding to leave behind protection, not just memories.”

‘The entire village received protection as shagun’

News of the gesture quickly spread beyond the wedding venue and across nearby villages. What was expected to be a lavish celebration with nearly 4,500 guests soon became a story of collective care and financial protection.

“It felt like entire village received a protective shawl as shagun. No one here had seen a wedding gift like this,” said resident Mohan Shekapure.

Village sarpanch Baliram Pethkar described the gesture as something the region had never witnessed before.

“People exchange sweets and souvenirs at weddings. Here, a family handed over security,” he said.

More than just memories from a wedding

Long after the guests returned home and the music faded away, the people of Bahadarpura were left with something far more lasting than memories of a grand wedding celebration.

Alongside invitation cards and photographs, the village carried home a promise — protection against life’s unexpected tragedies.
