Online vs offline prices: Woman shares why she now prefers local vendors for groceries

A grocery purchase has sparked a discussion about the price of convenience after an X user shared how she paid Rs 102 for just two guavas through a quick-commerce platform, while a local fruit vendor later offered her 8-10 guavas weighing nearly 1 kg for Rs 80.

The user, @Imadvika1, said she ordered guavas online after craving the fruit. When the delivery arrived, she found only two guavas in the packet despite paying Rs 102 for it.

Later that evening, she stopped at a nearby fruit vendor and bought 8-10 guavas, weighing nearly 1 kg, for Rs 80. The experience prompted her to compare the cost of ordering groceries online with buying directly from local sellers.

‘We’re also paying for convenience’

Sharing her experience, the user wrote, “That's when I realized that when we shop online, we're not only paying for the product. We're also paying for convenience, packaging, and delivery.”

She suggested that consumers compare prices with local markets before placing grocery orders online, as buying directly from vendors could sometimes offer more quantity for a lower price.

The post drew reactions from several users who said they had noticed similar price differences between online grocery platforms and local markets.

One user wrote, “We pay a premium for convenience, not just the product. Supporting local vendors often gets you better quality, quantity, and value.”

“This has happened to me many times. The same situation applies to mangoes, apples, and bananas. The locals offer fresh produce and lower prices,” another user said.

A different user described the difference as significant, writing, “This is a huge price difference for two guavas vs 1 kg. Quick commerce adds an extra convenience charge that adds to the final bill.”

“Fresh fruits are cheaper in local markets, while online fruits are more expensive just for convenience,” another commenter said.

One more user shared a similar comparison involving mangoes: “I tried it too... 1 kg of mangoes online for ₹180, locally for ₹90. Now I only open the app in emergencies.”
