Online classes back? After work-from-home push, Delhi CM’s latest announcement for schools and colleges

The Delhi government on Thursday announced several steps to save fuel and reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves, supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for careful spending and fuel conservation.

Push For Online Meetings And Classes

The Chief Minister said that half of all official meetings will now take place online. Colleges and universities will also be encouraged to conduct classes virtually wherever possible.

Schools and colleges to shift online?

The Delhi government has not declared online classes for students. However, the Chief Minister advised colleges and universities to hold guest lectures online wherever feasible in order to minimise unnecessary travel and reduce logistical expenses. This suggests that the government is aiming to curb non-essential movement while ensuring that regular academic activities continue without disruption.


Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced that government employees will now be required to work from home for two days a week. The decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to follow fuel-saving measures.

In addition, the fuel quota allotted for officers’ official vehicles has been cut by 20 per cent. Ministers and government officials will also have to travel by Metro every Monday. Delhi government offices will now operate from 10:30 am to 7 pm.

What PM said

While addressing a gathering in Secunderabad on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to work from home whenever possible, save fuel, avoid foreign travel for a year, use Swadeshi products, reduce cooking oil consumption, adopt natural farming practices, and limit gold purchases.

He urged people to cut down on petrol and diesel usage by choosing metro services and public transport whenever possible, using carpooling for private travel, relying more on railways for transporting goods, and promoting the use of electric vehicles.

What UP Chief Minister said

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also called for work-from-home twice a week and reducing fuel consumption. The Chief Minister on Tuesday issued orders to remove unnecessary vehicles from the official convoys and to reduce the fleets of ministers, including himself, by 50 percent with immediate effect. His appeal to adopt austerity measures came days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to reduce fuel consumption, defer gold purchases, and foreign travels.
