OnePlus Shutdown: CEO Robin Liu resigns; What Users Need to Know
OnePlus India Chief Executive Robin Liu has resigned from his post effective March 31, marking a significant leadership shift as the smartphone manufacturer grapples with a 38.8% year-on-year decline in shipments. Industry executives confirmed to The Economic Times that Liu’s departure follows a global restructuring within the parent OPPO Group, which has consolidated sub-brand operations under Realme CEO Sky Li. Despite the exit of the executive credited with steering the brand through previous retail conflicts, OnePlus issued an official statement Tuesday asserting that its India operations will continue under a localized strategy to ensure business continuity.

OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu Steps Down

Robin Liu, who joined OnePlus in 2018 and is credited with managing the brand's recovery during past retail disputes, is currently serving his notice period. According to a report by The Economic Times Bureau, the resignation followed a structural change where Liu was asked to report to Realme CEO Sky Li, who was elevated within the OPPO Group to oversee overall sub-brand operations. Previously, Liu and Li were considered organizational equals. In an official statement, OnePlus India noted: "We thank Robin for his contributions to OnePlus India. He moves on to pursue his personal passions, and we wish him the very best for his future endeavours".

OnePlus Shutdown Rumors and India Strategy

The leadership change coincides with widespread speculation regarding the brand's future in the country. In January 2026, Robin Liu addressed these concerns directly on X (formerly Twitter), stating that "unverified reports claiming OnePlus is shutting down are false" and that "OnePlus India's business operations continue as normal". To mitigate surging component costs and a consistent loss of market share to rivals like Samsung and vivo, the company has confirmed it is pivoting back to an online-dominant sales model. This move is intended to consolidate resources, cut operational spends, and retain profit margins.

What Happens to Existing OnePlus India Users and Services?

Despite the sharp decline in shipments—estimated at 32% by Cybermedia Research and 38.8% by IDC—the company has assured stakeholders that business continuity remains a priority. In its official update on India operations, the company stated: "OnePlus India operations continue with local strategy and business continuity ensured". For current users, this indicates that service centers, software updates, and retail support will remain functional under the new localized management structure, even as the brand reduces its physical retail footprint to focus on digital storefronts.
