‘One of the most terrifying experiences’: Gurugram woman accuses Uber driver of holding her arm, shutting the window, verbally abusing her and following her

A woman in Gurugram has accused an Uber driver of assaulting and threatening her following a dispute over the fare for a ride from Delhi airport. She alleged that the driver demanded more than double the fare displayed on the app and later followed her to her home.

“Is route ka itna hi hota hai (you need to pay the same amount as displayed by Rapido for this route),” the driver allegedly told the woman after demanding ₹1,479 for a ride that was priced at ₹625 on the Uber app.

The woman, a software engineer and AI professional identified as Sharma, shared her account on X, describing the incident as one of the most terrifying experiences of her life.

Uber Driver Allegedly Demanded ₹1,479 Instead Of ₹625

According to Sharma's account, she booked an Uber to Gurugram after arriving at Delhi airport. The app showed a fare of around ₹625 for the journey, but the driver allegedly demanded ₹1,479, showing her a screenshot of a fare quoted on another platform, Rapido.

When Sharma pointed out that the screenshot was from Rapido and not Uber, the driver allegedly insisted on the higher amount, saying, “iss route ka itna hi hota hai."

Sharma said she paid the fare displayed on the Uber app. However, she alleged that the driver then locked the car and refused to let her retrieve her luggage unless she paid ₹1,479.

Woman Alleges Driver Held Her Arm And Blocked Luggage Retrieval

Sharma further alleged that the dispute escalated when she attempted to collect her belongings from the vehicle. According to her post, the driver held her arm and shut the front-seat window where her luggage was kept, allegedly trying to prevent her from retrieving it.

“He locked the car and refused to let me take my luggage out unless I paid ₹1,479. When I tried retrieving my belongings, he held my arm and shut the front-seat window where my luggage was, trying to stop me from taking it out," she said.

She eventually managed to retrieve her luggage and leave the vehicle.

Uber Driver Allegedly Followed Woman To Her Home

Sharma alleged that the driver followed her after she left the vehicle and reached her residence in Gurugram. She claimed that he forced his way through the gate and verbally abused her.

According to her account, the driver continued threatening her even after she managed to enter her house and lock the door. She further alleged that he attempted to climb the gate while hurling abuses and threatening her life.

“He followed me, forced the gate, abused me horribly and wouldn’t let me go inside peacefully. I finally managed to get inside and lock the door. He then started climbing the gate while hurling abuses and threatening my life," Sharma said.

The alleged incident took place at around 4:45 am in Gurugram.

Woman Raises Concerns Over Uber Safety Support

Sharma also raised concerns about her attempts to contact Uber's safety team after the incident. She alleged that the safety support option was unavailable when she tried to report what had happened.

Emphasising the seriousness of the incident, she said the confrontation had gone beyond a disagreement over the ride fare.

“This wasn’t a fare dispute anymore. This was intimidation, physical aggression and a terrifying violation of my safety at my own doorstep," she wrote in her post.

Police have taken cognizance of her post and contacted her, asking her to share her details through a direct message so that further action can be taken.
