India has named Lieutenant General (Retd) NS Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), placing a highly experienced and battle-tested Army officer at the top of the country’s military leadership. His appointment marks a key transition in India’s defence command structure, with the senior officer set to oversee coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

NS Raja Subramani: Early life and background

Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani hails from Tamil Nadu, where he was born and raised in a middle-class family. While official early schooling details remain limited in public domain, his academic and military journey reflects a strong foundation in discipline and competitive defence training.

His career path took a decisive turn when he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) before moving on to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), where he was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1985.

Raja Subramani is considered among the Army’s most academically accomplished senior officers. According to defence records, he has studied at several prestigious institutions during his service:

Commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles, one of the Indian Army’s distinguished infantry regiments, he went on to serve for nearly four decades in a career spanning high-altitude operations, counter-insurgency roles, and strategic command appointments.

  • Brigade and divisional command roles
  • Corps Commander in operational theatres
  • GOC-in-C of Central Command
  • Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS)
He also served in sensitive regions such as Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast, gaining extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations and border management.
