In a horrendous series of events, a 47-year-old man was killed in USA's North Carolina after his wonky GPS led him off a half-finished bridge to his death.

Phil Paxson was driving home, on September 30, in his Jeep Gladiator when the accident took place. American publications report that authorities found Paxson dead when they arrived at the scene of the accident on the morning of October 1.

Paxson's vehicle was found around 9am the next day, "upside down and partially submerged in a creek in an area where the roadway had washed out," according to a law enforcement news release.

In a Facebook post, Paxson's widow wrote of the tragedy, calling it "easily avoidable," saying, "This was a known hazard. 2014!! Just an accident waiting to happen. Phil had to lose his life to bring awareness."

Reports say that the barriers warning drivers of the collapsed bridge ahead had apparently been moved.

Paxson's sister-in-law, Kayla Bubar, has set up a GoFundMe for his funeral expenses, which has reached more than half of its $50,000 goal.

Paxson is survived by his wife and two daughters, two sisters, a sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews, according to his obituary.
