An order issued on Wednesday has stated that from August 1, two-wheeler riders without helmet wouldn’t be allowed to refuel at petrol stations in Indore district. The officials told PTI that this move will help in reducing traffic violations.
Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, former judge and chairman of the Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee, issued directions in this regard following a meeting held on Tuesday.

Legal consequences for non-compliance

Indore district magistrate Ashish Singh told reporters that a restrictive order has been issued in view of these instructions. “From August 1, two-wheeler drivers without helmets will not be given petrol at fuel pumps in the district,” he said. The order has been issued under section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023.

Petrol pumps found violating the directive will face legal action, which may include imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to Rs 5,000, or both.

Court’s concern over rising violations

The decision follows recent observations made by the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which expressed displeasure over the rampant violation of traffic rules in Indore. The court underscored the need for strict and effective measures to improve road safety in the city.

Vehicle data shared by transport office

According to Regional Transport Officer Pradeep Sharma, around 32 lakh vehicles have been registered in Indore district since 1950, including approximately 16 lakh two-wheelers. He added that about 21 lakh vehicles are currently operating on the city’s roads.
