Students seeking financial assistance under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) have been given additional time to apply for the 2026-27 academic year. The Union Ministry of Education has moved the application deadline to November 15, 2026, allowing eligible candidates to submit their forms through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in.

The revised schedule also sets separate cut-off dates for verification by educational institutions and district authorities. Institute Nodal Officers (L1) must complete verification by November 30, while District Nodal Officers (L2) have until December 15, 2026, to finish the process.

Students applying for the scholarship are advised to complete their One-Time Registration (OTR) before filling out the application. Those who have already submitted their forms should also track their verification status to ensure that their applications are processed within the stipulated period.

Under the updated schedule, students must submit their applications online by November 15. The subsequent verification process will take place in two stages, with institute-level scrutiny due by November 30 and district-level verification scheduled to close on December 15.

The latest available figures show that 90,483 fresh applications and 1,99,531 renewal applications have been submitted under the scheme. Candidates who have completed the registration process should ensure that their forms are verified by the respective nodal officers before the applicable deadlines.

What is the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme?

The NMMSS is a central government initiative designed to help students from economically weaker backgrounds continue their education beyond Class 8. It aims to reduce the likelihood of students discontinuing their studies because of financial constraints and supports eligible beneficiaries through Class 12.

The scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships every year to students selected through examinations conducted by the respective state and Union Territory governments. Students who qualify and meet the prescribed conditions receive financial assistance while studying in government-aided schools or institutions run by local bodies.

Each selected student receives Rs 12,000 annually. The scholarship amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary's bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

NMMS eligibility criteria: Class 7 marks and family income limit

Students seeking selection under the NMMSS must have secured at least 55% marks, or an equivalent grade, in Class 7. Applicants belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories are eligible for a relaxation of five percentage points in the minimum marks requirement.

The annual income of the applicant's parents must not exceed Rs 3.50 lakh. Candidates must also qualify in the selection examination conducted by their respective state or Union Territory to be considered for the fresh scholarship.
