An alumna of the institute’s College of Nursing (2006–2010), Mehta’s appointment is being seen as a milestone not only for her alma mater but also for the wider nursing community.
Those who knew Mehta during her student years describe her as someone who did not actively seek the spotlight, yet consistently distinguished herself through her work and demeanour.
As per a TOI report, Dr Latha Venkatesan, principal of the College of Nursing, recalled that Mehta was a well-rounded and engaged student who balanced academics with co-curricular activities while managing responsibilities with ease. She was known for being organised, dependable and possessing strong interpersonal skills.

Nisha Mehta's early signs of leadership
Educators say Mehta displayed leadership qualities early on, even if she was not overtly political at the time.Former principal Dr Manju Vatsa offered a slightly different perspective, describing Mehta as quiet and reserved, yet exceptionally capable.
“She was a very serious and highly intelligent student, efficient in her work and studies. Her discipline and focus truly stood out,” she said.
From healthcare professional to policymaker
At the time, there were few indications that Mehta would eventually enter politics. She was not among the more outspoken students, nor was she visibly inclined towards public life.Inputs from TOI
