'Nihilist penguin' goes political: Trump joins penguin's death march trend with 'embrace the penguin' post, Internet mocks White House errors. Check latest memes
The 'Nihilist penguin' is all over social media. US President Donald Trump also joined the Nihilist penguin trend after the White House posted an AI-generated image of him walking next to a penguin carrying the US flag, while the Greenland flag st...

The 'Nihilist penguin' meme reached a wider audience after the White House shared an AI-generated image of US President Donald Trump walking beside a penguin carrying an American flag. But the eagle-eyed netizens were quick enough to point out the technical flaws, including matching footprints, and noted that penguins do not live in the Arctic or at the North Pole. In the image, one can see a penguin holding the US flag, while the mountains carry the Greenland flag, with the caption, “Embrace the Penguin.” “Penguins don’t live in Greenland. But ignorance lives in the White House,” one user posted on X. Another said, “This is why Europeans continue to question whether education is illegal in the United States.”
The US has recently been openly signaling its message of acquiring Greenland by consecutively posting AI-generated images on social media that mark Greenland as US territory. The White House’s post is linked to Trump’s repeated threats to take control of Greenland, which is a Danish territory. These remarks also led to tensions with the European Union, a long-time ally of the United States.

Responding to the post, Rasmus Jarlov, a Conservative MP in Denmark, used a sarcastic message to mock Trump, writing, “The message from the White House is clear: Trump belongs in Greenland as much as penguins do.”
What is the 'Nihilist penguin' meme trend?
A short video showing a lone penguin moving away from its group towards far-off Antarctic mountains has gone viral and netizens have dubbed it the “Nihilist Penguin”. The clip has dominated TikTok, Instagram, Reddit and other platforms and the footage is from a 2007 documentary by German filmmaker Werner Herzog. Penguins are often seen together in groups and are known for their togetherness but in this 'Nihlist penguin' clip, a single penguin chooses a different path, a different from the usual behaviour.ALSO READ: Ratha Saptami 2026: Date, time, Snan muhurat, significance, what to avoid and powerful mantras to chant on the birthday of Lord Surya
In the clip, Adélie penguin stands near its colony before turning away. While the other penguins head toward the coast, this one walks inland. There is no sign of food or shelter. The penguin does not hesitate. It walks at a steady pace, alone. Herzog’s narration explains that this route leads away from survival. Inland Antarctica offers nothing a penguin needs. Herzog’s narration even calls it a kind of “death march” because the penguin is unlikely to survive the inland trek.
The “Nihilist Penguin” meme has gained alot of popularity because viewers have instinctively projected human emotions and existential ideas onto the penguin’s slow, solitary walk. The internet has given it a much deeper, symbolic reading.
How social media reacted to the nihilist penguin trend
The 'Nihilist penguin' clip has garnered millions of views with memes tying it to existential themes like "heading towards oblivion". In Werner Herzog’s 2007 film “Encounters at the End of the World”, an Adelie penguin moves away from its colony and walking off towards the Antarctic landscape. The penguin's decision to go in another direction has taken over social media, as viewers began to see their own feelings reflected in its behaviour.Social media users have described the bird as a sign of existential crisis, defiance and a search for purpose. “It feels lonely. It feels existential. It feels human,” a user wrote on X.
“The penguin edit goes viral because it shows exactly what many people feel inside: stuck in a boring, toxic or trapping life like a shitty job, fake friends or just the same old routine that slowly kills your soul,” one user said on X.
Another user wrote, “Generation so cooked that a penguin walking is motivating 1000s of people,” while someone else posted, “We are all penguins on our way to the mountains and we owe explanation to nobody.”
