India is set to establish its first Night Sky Sanctuary in Ladakh, which is expected to give a boost to Astro-tourism in the region and generate revenue and livelihoods. In December 2022, the Ladakh Union Territory Administration declared the proposed creation of a Dark Sky Reserve in Hanle village located in Eastern Ladakh. The proposed Dark Sky Reserve in Hanle village, located in Eastern Ladakh, encompasses an area of 1,073 square kilometres and is situated within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. It is adjacent to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, which is the second-highest optical telescope in the world, positioned at an elevation of 4,500 meters.

The proposed Dark Sky Reserve at Hanle village in Eastern Ladakh is a rare and distinguished destination, as there are only 15 or 16 similar reserves in the world. Its unique location within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, adjacent to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, which is the second-highest optical telescope globally, makes it an ideal spot for stargazing enthusiasts. The Reserve will provide an outstanding view of the night sky, making it an attractive destination for stargazers for almost the entire year.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said that the Night Sky Reserve is expected to promote eco-friendly activities of astro-tourism, spread awareness about astronomy, boost scientific research with reduced artificial light, and conserve wildlife.

During a meeting with a delegation led by the Chairman of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Tashi Gyalson, in New Delhi, Union Minister Jitendra Singh discussed a diverse set of matters related to the progress of the area.

He also said that on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology and CSIR, he will request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Night Sky Reserve at an early date.

Furthermore, Jitendra Singh expressed his support for the development of food products from Leh Berry, a nutritionally rich and exotic fruit of the region.
