In a bid to put his name in the Guinness Book of World Records, Ebere did something really weird: - became the man with the longest time spent crying!
However, his ambitious attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous crying session resulted in detrimental health effects. During his attempt to cry continuously for a week, he suffered temporary blindness, a swollen face, and a severe headache due to the pressure and strain on his eyes and nerves. Unfortunately, the Guinness Book of World Records did not recognise his unofficial attempt.
Ebere wasn't alone in this Guinness mania.
Nigerian chef Hilda Baci also tried a 'four-day chef challenge' to create a world record. She generated massive interest after cooking for 100 hours, but in the process, she also caused the Guinness World Records website to crash for two days.
These trends of attempting unusual and extravagant records have inspired numerous enthusiasts, to showcase their efforts on social media platforms.
While some record attempts focus on promoting noble causes, such as John Obot's extensive reading to promote literacy in Nigeria, other pursuits verge on the extreme. Attempts like frying the largest number of snails, striving for the longest non-stop massage (resulting in a masseuse's collapse), and preparing a vast quantity of 'puff-puffs,' a popular doughnut-like snack, showcase the determination to achieve unique accomplishments.
Meanwhile, officials at Guinness World Records have issued a warning to aspiring record-breakers, emphasising the importance of prioritising safety and proceeding with caution in their endeavours.
"Just to quell some recent rumours, we wouldn't ever monitor a record for the longest marathon crying," Guinness World Records said in a tweet.
The group, which records all things record-breaking, also added a link to its webpage that lists the rules governing its process to document all record-breaking things.
As these viral sensations continue to captivate audiences, it is essential to strike a balance between pushing boundaries and ensuring personal safety. Responsible and mindful pursuit of records can create positive impacts and inspire others without compromising individuals' health and safety.
