New show beats ‘Stranger Things’ to claim top spot on Netflix; here's how it happened
According to Den of Geek website, The Resident Evil has made a strong start by claiming the top spot in the US in its first weekend.

Stranger Things has had an unchallenged run at the top position for several weeks, before relinquishing it for a while to 'The Umbrella Academy'. The show easily reclaimed the top slot on July 1st, when the last two episodes of the season were released. Things could have continued in the same way but something significant happened this weekend, as ‘Resident Evil’ swiftly dethroned Stranger Things Season 4 from the top position.
One of the most watched sci-fi thriller horror web series, Stranger Things hit Netflix on May 27 and surged to the top slot by garnering over 188 million total hours view across the globe. While the series has been enjoying a spot in the Top 10 rankings in 93 countries, it also shattered the view record of past seasons in quick time.
What made Season 4 so special was the friendship between Dustin Henderson & Eddie Munson and how Eleven takes on new challenges post-Hawkins. Season 4 wrapped up on an interesting note. Now there is a lot to decipher for fans as they wait for the final season.

Though there isn't much similarity between the series Resident Evil and its video games, there are many relatable elements in the plot, which have been taken from the source material and must have piqued the interest of gamers also.
