'Never felt so low': Rented house search in South Delhi turns into a reality check, sparks debate online
A Reddit user's house-hunting experience in South Delhi went viral. The user felt belittled by a broker during a conversation about rent in Defence Colony. The post sparked a discussion about the challenges of finding affordable housing in Delhi. ...

"I happened to see a post in south Delhi flatmates group on FB. Defence colony was mentioned as the area but the rent was not. I reached out to enquire and i responded politely that its out of my budget. This broker continued the conversation and ended up breaking my confidence," he posted on Reddit.
“I politely said it’s out of my budget, but the broker kept talking in a tone that broke my confidence,” the user wrote. “Fifteen years ago, I stayed in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in my hometown. I studied, worked hard, and reached a role that requires me to be in head office. This will be my first time in Delhi, but this conversation made me feel small again and showed me that I have a long way to go in life. The tone just felt belittling even though what the broker stated is a fact.”
The post struck a chord with many readers who shared both practical advice and reassurance.
One user wrote, “Chill, not that serious. You are surely doing great if ₹45,000 is your budget just for rent.”
Another pointed out the going rates: “You can get a 2BHK in South Delhi for ₹50–60k, or a 1RK for ₹25–30k. CR Park is cheaper. Brokers here are mostly thieves, only a few are honest. Better to contact owners directly on Facebook or apps like NoBroker.”
Some comments also tried to boost morale. One user said, “Bhai sun, Delhi hai… yaha dhundhne se bohot kuch mil jayega. Confidence hi Delhi mein sabse important hai.”
The post has now become a mix of house-hunting advice, local insights, and reminders about resilience while moving to a new city. For many young professionals, the story resonated as a reminder of the challenges and realities of renting in Delhi’s competitive property market.
