Netflix to release Dhanush starrer bilingual film Vaathi/Sir

Netflix is set to premiere Dhanush and Samyuktha Menon starrer Vaathi on March 17th. The film, directed by Venky Atluri, was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, with the latter titled ‘Sir’.

Experts are predicting Vaathi to be a success on Netflix, given the platform's growing interest in southern language content. With an increasing number of viewers from outside India, southern films are gaining global popularity, and more success than ever.

Last year, Netflix's RRR, Beast, and Jana Gana Mana were big hits. Amazon Prime Video's Tamil original Suzhal also saw significant traction. Producers and platform executives believe that one advantage of southern originals is that they are easy to put together.


In 2022, an estimated 50% of overall subscription growth came from the five southern markets. RRR has become the most popular Indian film on Netflix globally, with more than 73 million hours viewed in the first four weeks of its release. Two-thirds of this viewing came from outside India.

Other southern films have also found success on Netflix. Vijay-starrer ‘Beast’ featured in the weekly Top 10 in 13 countries, while Telugu film ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ trended on the India Top 10 row for films for nine weeks and in the Global Top 10 row for films for two weeks in 11 countries, including Bahrain, Bangladesh, Oman, Qatar, and others.
Experts in the media and entertainment industry say that apart from large, tentpole films, smaller southern titles have also broken out. Examples include Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Love Today, and Rorschach.
