Nepal Protests Reason
The death toll from protests against Nepal’s social media ban has climbed to 18, with more than 200 people injured across the country, The Himalayan Times reported. Demonstrators have demanded the restoration of access to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp after the government blocked 26 online services. According to the newspaper, 16 of the fatalities were reported in Kathmandu Valley and two in Itahari.

Nepal Protest Reason: What is Actually Happening in Nepal?

While the official narrative has focused on the ban and its impact, a detailed post on Reddit has claimed that the unrest runs deeper than access to social media. The writer, who identified as a Nepali citizen living near the India border, said the ban was “only the spark” for wider frustration over corruption, nepotism, and economic inequality.

The post alleged that authorities framed the restrictions around tax and registration issues, but the real intent was censorship—giving the government the power to delete online criticism and jail dissenters.

Nepal Protests against “Nepo Babies”

According to the Reddit post, an online trend dubbed “Nepo Babies” exposed the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children—designer clothing, luxury cars, expensive homes, and frequent international travel—while ordinary citizens face daily hardship.

The post pointed out that Nepal’s prime minister officially earns less than ₹65,000 per month, yet political families appear to possess wealth in millions. Protesters, it said, have linked this inequality to decades of instability, noting that no prime minister has completed a full term in over 20 years.

Jobs crisis and migration

The same Reddit account highlighted Nepal’s ongoing jobs crisis, claiming nearly 5,000 young people leave the country every day for work abroad due to the lack of employment and decent wages at home. What began as a Gen Z movement against censorship has, according to the post, now united different age groups demanding accountability and systemic reform.

'Protests led by Gen Z are not only against social media ban'

The Reddit writer criticised media coverage for portraying the protests as a reaction to social media addiction, arguing that this framing undermines the deeper causes of anger.

With fatalities mounting and demonstrations intensifying, Nepal faces a critical test. Verified reports point to a growing death toll, while accounts on social media suggest the unrest reflects much broader frustrations over governance, corruption, and inequality.
