A 55-year-old woman from Ghaziabad lost her life in Kathmandu, Nepal, after a fire broke out at the hotel where she was staying during anti-government protests. The victim, identified as Rajesh Devi Singh Gola, reportedly fell to her death while attempting to escape from the fourth floor. Her husband, Ramveer Singh Gola, also 55, sustained injuries during the incident.

The tragedy occurred on September 9, shortly after the couple returned from a visit to the Pashupatinath temple. According to their son, Vishal, protesters allegedly stormed the Hyatt Regency hotel around 11:30 pm and set it ablaze. With flames quickly spreading, the couple attempted to escape through the room window.

Ramveer reportedly broke the window, threw a mattress to the ground, and fashioned a makeshift rope from curtains and bedsheets. Rajesh Devi tried to climb down first but fell, suffering critical injuries. Ramveer also injured himself while descending.

Local authorities and fellow guests rushed the couple to TU Teaching Hospital, where Rajesh Devi succumbed to her injuries.

Ghaziabad ADM (F&M) Saurabh Bhatt confirmed that the district administration is coordinating efforts to bring the body back to India. “We are providing all possible assistance and have instructed districts along the Nepal border to extend full cooperation,” he said.

Videos circulating on social media show the hotel’s interiors charred and ransacked. Some users appealed for help online, claiming multiple Indian families were stranded at the property during the attack.

Vishal alleged that the response from the Indian Embassy and local authorities was slow, forcing him to arrange road transport to bring his mother’s body home.

Former colleagues of Ramveer stated he made several desperate calls seeking assistance during the ordeal.
