Nepal Floods: 2 arrested for allegedly stealing gold earrings from woman’s body swept away in river; video goes viral

Amid ongoing rescue operations following devastating flash floods along the China-Nepal border, Nepal police have arrested two men for allegedly stealing gold earrings from the body of a woman who was swept away by floodwaters in the Narayani River.

The arrests followed the circulation of a video on social media that allegedly showed the two men removing what appeared to be gold earrings from the deceased woman's ears.

Viral Video Leads To Arrests

Nepal police later reshared the 41-second video and said the two men had been taken into custody for allegedly stealing the earrings from the woman's body.



The footage reportedly showed the suspects using wooden planks and the woman's hair to pull her body out of the river. They allegedly removed earrings from both ears and placed them aside, while several people stood nearby and recorded the incident on their phones.

Police Identify Two Suspects

Chitwan Police said their investigation established that the incident involved a woman's body that had been swept into the Narayani River during the massive flooding.

Based on the video, police identified the suspects as 25-year-old Madan Gurung and 38-year-old Umesh Chaudhary. According to Nepali media outlet Khabarhub, citing police officials, both men were arrested near Pokhara Bus Park in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-1 on Thursday.

Nepal Floods Leave Hundreds Dead

The arrests come as Nepal continues to deal with one of its deadliest flood disasters in recent years. Rescue teams are searching through mud and debris for more than 1,400 people reported missing after flash floods and landslides struck areas along the Nepal-Tibet border.

The disaster has reportedly claimed at least 500 lives, with entire villages swept away by the powerful floodwaters. Rescue and recovery operations remain underway as authorities continue searching for missing people and assessing the scale of the destruction.
