A massive flash flood has struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border, sweeping through villages and infrastructure project sites along the Bhote Koshi river. Videos of the massive flash flood show the sheer force of the water as tonnes of muddy water rush through the mountainous terrain, carrying away everything in their path. The sudden surge has raised fears of significant damage in the region.

Syapru Besi and Timure among worst-hit areas

Officials said the areas around Syapru Besi and Timure in Rasuwa have been severely affected by the flash flood. Narendra Pariyar, the district administrator, said authorities had received reports of villages and infrastructure project sites being washed away. At the time of the initial reports, officials did not have a confirmed estimate of casualties or the extent of property damage.



"There could be heavy casualties or loss of property," Pariyar said, while cautioning that the situation was still developing.

The Bhote Koshi river has become the main focus of concern as officials continue to warn people living along its banks to stay alert.

Nepal government urges people to move to safer areas

Prime Minister Balendra Shah said rescue and relief teams had been deployed to assist people affected by the flooding.

Police and military personnel were also sent to the region as authorities began responding to the emergency.

The government urged residents in lower-lying areas to move to safer locations and specifically advised people living close to the river to exercise extra caution.


The warnings are particularly important in the mountainous region, where sudden changes in river levels can leave communities with very little time to respond.

The floodwater can be seen surging through areas close to settlements and project sites, with debris being carried along by the current. In a matter of seconds, structures and other material in the path of the water can be overwhelmed by the force of the flood.


The footage also highlights how quickly flash floods can develop in mountainous areas. What may initially appear to be a rise in river water can turn into a dangerous torrent within a short period.

Bhote Koshi river flows from Tibet into Nepal

The Bhote Koshi river originates in Tibet before entering Nepal. It eventually joins the Trishuli river, which continues towards India and forms part of the river system associated with the Gandak.

Because communities and infrastructure are located along parts of the river, sudden flooding can cause widespread disruption.


The region has experienced a devastating flood before. Last year, flooding along the Bhote Koshi river killed nine people, while another 24 were reported missing. The disaster also destroyed the Friendship Bridge connecting Nepal and China, disrupting transport and trade for months.

That earlier flood was linked by a regional climate monitor to the drainage of a supraglacial lake in Tibet.

Rescue operations underway

With the latest flood, authorities are focusing on evacuating people from vulnerable locations and assessing the damage.

The immediate priority remains finding people who may have been caught in the flood, moving residents away from the river and reaching areas where roads or infrastructure may have been damaged.


Officials have warned that the casualty and damage figures could change as rescue teams reach more affected locations.

For residents along the Bhote Koshi, authorities have stressed one message: stay alert and move to higher ground if conditions worsen.
