The footage, captured from a rooftop, shows an individual being chased by a crowd before being rescued by bystanders. While the person’s face is not clearly visible, multiple sources have identified him as Minister Paudel.
The incident comes amid widespread unrest following demonstrations by Gen Z activists. On Tuesday, protesters targeted the private residences of Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Poudel and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
At Poudel’s home in Bohoratpur, protesters reportedly stormed the property, tossing a portrait of the president onto the staircase. In Balkot, demonstrators set fire to Oli’s residence, although he was not present, staying instead at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Balwatar.
The protests also spread to the central office of the Nepali Congress in Sanepa, which was set ablaze, and to the home of former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in Naikap, Kathmandu. In Lalitpur district, agitators hurled stones at the residence of Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, who had previously ordered a ban on several social media platforms.
The unrest follows Monday’s deadly protests, during which 18 people lost their lives after the government blocked access to major social media apps including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, X, and Tencent-owned platforms. Authorities said the restriction aimed to enforce new regulations requiring platforms to register in Nepal, a move intended to combat fake accounts, hate speech, fraud, and other online crimes.
By late Monday night, the government restored access to the platforms in an apparent attempt to ease tensions. However, the protests continued into a second day, with demonstrators demanding Prime Minister Oli’s resignation and targeting residences of several political figures. Clashes with police further escalated the situation across the country.
In response, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called for an all-party meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, urging citizens to remain calm. “I am in dialogue with the relevant parties to assess the situation and find a meaningful conclusion. I humbly request all brothers and sisters to remain calm during this difficult time,” he stated.
