India's Olympic medalist and world champion Neeraj Chopra will defend his title at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Thursday, which features a highly anticipated clash with Pakistani rival and Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem, continuing their intense rivalry in men's javelin throw.

Neeraj Chopra, currently ranked world number two, is eyeing his third medal at the World Championships. He made history in 2022 as India’s first-ever World Championships silver medalist and went on to claim gold in Budapest in 2023 with a throw of 88.17m, just ahead of Nadeem, who took silver with 87.82m.

The rivalry with Nadeem heated up after the Paris Olympics, where Nadeem clinched gold with a record throw of 92.97m, leaving Chopra with silver. Despite that, Chopra has dominated most of their previous encounters.


Chopra’s 2025 season has been impressive. He won the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru with a throw of 86.18m and kicked off the season with a victorious performance at the Potch Invitational in South Africa.


At the Doha Diamond League in May, Chopra achieved a personal milestone by crossing the 90-metre mark for the first time, recording 90.23m and finishing second. He continued his strong performance with a second-place finish at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland.
