Navjot Singh Sidhu announced in a press conference that his wife, former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu, is now cancer-free after battling Stage IV cancer for over a year. Doctors had initially given her just a 3% chance of survival, but her recovery, which combined disciplined dietary practices and medical treatment, is being hailed as an inspiring tale of resilience.

Speaking to the media, Sidhu said, “Her cancer came back after our son’s marriage, which she insisted on because she doubted her survival. But she never lost hope and faced cancer bravely.” He also emphasised the role of government hospitals, including Government Rajendra Medical College in Patiala, where much of her treatment was carried out, costing only a few lakhs.

What lifestyle changes did Navjot Kaur Sidhu make?

According to Sidhu, Navjot Kaur’s recovery was supported by a strict dietary and lifestyle regimen:

  • Morning Routine: Her day began with lemon water, followed by 10–12 neem leaves half an hour later.
  • Nutrient-Rich Diet: She consumed raw turmeric, apple cider vinegar, and anti-cancer foods, including pumpkin, pomegranate, amla, beetroot, walnuts, and sour fruits. Berries were described by Sidhu as “a strong medicine for cancer.”
  • Cooking Methods: Meals were prepared using coconut oil, cold-pressed oils, or almond oil. Spices like cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, jaggery, and cardamom featured prominently in her diet.
  • Meal Timing: She practised intermittent fasting, with her last meal at 6:30 pm and her first at 10:30 am.
  • Hydration: She only consumed water with a pH level of 7, which Sidhu called “the most important part of her diet.”
  • Carb-Free Evenings: Rice and wheat were eliminated from her dinner; instead, she consumed quinoa.
  • Sidhu credited her discipline, saying, “She defeated cancer not because we had money but because she was disciplined and followed a strict routine.”

What did experts say about it: Diet Supports, But Does Not Cure

While Navjot Kaur’s recovery is inspiring, medical experts caution against interpreting dietary changes as a stand-alone cure. Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Head of Medical Oncology at SHALBY Sanar International Hospitals, Gurugram, explained, “Mrs Sidhu received all the treatment available as per the diagnosis. Stage-4 cancer with limited metastatic sites can be cured with the current standard of care. Several studies state the benefits of curcumin (a component found in turmeric) in treating/preventing cancer, but there is no clear evidence in humans to support the benefits.”

Dr Puneet Gupta, Chairman of Oncology at Asian Hospital, added, “Cancer can’t be cured by diet alone. However, dietary interventions are important for overall anti-cancer care, as patients are likely to suffer from anaemia, weight loss, and electrolyte imbalance.”

Dr Prashant Mehta, Medical Oncologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, warned against misinformation, stating, “Science is difficult and not as easy to absorb as this. Patients must rely on evidence-based treatments instead of practices that may lack scientific validation.”

The Role of Specific Foods in Recovery

Many of the foods in Navjot Kaur’s diet have properties that may support cancer recovery:

  • Turmeric (Curcumin): Known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, curcumin may inhibit cancer cell growth and metastasis. However, Dr Srinath, Senior Ortho-Oncologist at Asha Hospitals, noted, “Curcumin’s bioavailability is low, reducing its effectiveness unless consumed with enhancers like black pepper.”
  • Neem Leaves: Traditionally used in Ayurveda, neem has immune-modulating effects. A 2018 study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine found it can reduce oxidative stress linked to cancer progression.
  • Sour Fruits (Pomegranate, Amla): Rich in antioxidants, these fruits may complement cancer treatments. Dr Srinath highlighted, “Pomegranate extracts might inhibit certain cancer cells, while amla can neutralise free radicals and support chemotherapy.”
  • Cold-Pressed Oils and Almond Oil: These oils are rich in nutrients that support cardiovascular health and immunity. Coconut oil, with its medium-chain triglycerides, provides quick energy for patients experiencing weight loss.

Does Intermittent Fasting Work to Cure Cancer?

Navjot Kaur’s practice of intermittent fasting drew attention for its potential benefits. Clinical nutritionist Nisha Mandal noted that short fasting intervals can stabilise glucose and insulin levels, which are often linked to cancer risks. However, she cautioned, “One needs to ensure the fasting does not exceed more than eight hours. Also, during the eating window, they must balance essential nutrients.”

Dr Mehta was more sceptical, stating, “Intermittent fasting offers no established benefits for cancer patients. For those with diabetes, it could even lead to dangerous ketosis.” He emphasised consulting healthcare professionals before adopting such regimens.

The Challenges of Cancer Care

Sidhu’s announcement also highlighted the accessibility of cancer care in government hospitals. He expressed gratitude for the affordable treatment and hoped his wife’s journey would inspire others. “Cancer can be defeated with discipline, courage, and a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Experts, however, stressed that recovery stories like Navjot Kaur’s should not overshadow the critical role of standard medical treatments. Dr Mehta urged individuals to rely on science-backed approaches and warned against misinformation propagated by social media and public figures.

Navjot Kaur’s journey is a reminder that while lifestyle changes can complement medical care, they are not substitutes for evidence-based treatment. Her story underscores the power of resilience and the importance of accessible healthcare in overcoming even the toughest challenges.
