National Youth Day 2026: Every year on January 12, India celebrates National Youth Day to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, one of the country’s greatest philosophers, thinkers, and youth icons. National Youth Day celebrates the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and inspires the youth to contribute positively to society. The Government of India declared January 12 as National Youth Day in 1984 to inspire young people by linking them to the ideals and teachings of Swami Vivekananda and encouraging their active role in nation-building. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata. A foremost disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Vivekananda played a pivotal role in introducing Indian philosophies such as Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world, leaving a lasting global impact.

National Youth Day 2026: History and Significance

Born as Narendra Nath Dutta in 1863, Swami Vivekananda became a devoted disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and later emerged as a global ambassador of Indian philosophies, particularly Yoga and Vedanta. His historic address at the 1893 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago, which began with the iconic greeting “Sisters and brothers of America,” is remembered as a defining moment that introduced India’s rich spiritual heritage to the Western world and earned him international acclaim.

National Youth Day serves as a platform to motivate the younger generation to embrace values of leadership, character, discipline, and social responsibility. To mark the occasion, schools and colleges across the country organise a wide range of activities, including debates, speeches, essay-writing competitions, and cultural programmes. Youth conferences, seminars, and workshops are also held, focusing on personal development, nation-building, and ethical leadership.

PM to interact with 3,000 young leaders today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the concluding session of the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026 on January 12 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, at around 4:30 pm, according to an official government release. The Prime Minister is expected to interact with nearly 3,000 young participants from across the country during the event. Young delegates representing the international diaspora will also be there.

"Selected participants will make their final presentations to the Prime Minister across ten thematic tracks, sharing youth-led perspectives and actionable ideas on key areas of national importance," the release noted.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports observes the week starting January 12 as National Youth Week, organising seminars, cultural events, leadership workshops, and social initiatives to encourage creativity, responsibility, and nation-building among young Indians.
