The theme for this year is “Sport to Promote Peaceful and Inclusive Societies.” It underlines the role of sport in breaking barriers, encouraging inclusivity, and bringing communities together beyond regional, religious, or cultural divides. The focus is on using sport as a means to build peace and harmony.Adding to the occasion, the Fit India Mission will host a three-day campaign (29–31 August). Activities such as “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main” will encourage people of all ages to spend at least an hour daily on outdoor games and physical activity.
History of National Sports Day
National Sports Day is observed in honour of Major Dhyan Chand (1905–1979), also known as the “Hockey Wizard.” Born on 29 August, he led India to Olympic gold medals in hockey in 1928, 1932, and 1936. His brilliance on the field earned him worldwide admiration and laid the foundation of India’s sporting heritage.In recognition of his contribution, the Government of India declared his birthday as National Sports Day to inspire future generations.
