National Mango Day: All you need to know about

Indians love mangoes and it is an integral part of their culture and history and that's why it is fittingly called the king of fruits. Though the delectable fruit is available only for a few months - from April to August, no other fruit can match its popularity. Today, India produces the largest quantity of mangoes in the world and also supplies more than 50% of these tropical fruits across the globe.

Each year, National Mango Day is observed on July 22 to celebrate the fruit. From ancient Indian literature to artefacts found during excavations from the Harappan civilisation in Indus Valley, there are clear references to this luscious fruit.

Some of the most popular varieties of Mangoes in India are Himsagar, Kesar, Chausa, Neelum, Alphonso and Dasheri among others. Besides being juicy and delicious, this fruit also comes with vitamins C and D. Therefore, many people consume mangoes for health reasons.


According to historians, mangoes were first cultivated in India around 5,000 years ago. Mango is grown in parts of Asia to the Middle East and some parts of South America and East Africa.

While Indian Alphonso mangoes are widely sought after fruits in the world, the credit for being the most expensive mango in the world goes to the Miyazaki mango which is cultivated in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur. Reportedly one kilogram of these mangoes costs around Rs 20,000 in India and Rs 2. 70 lakh per kg in the international market.
