NASA has embarked on an ambitious Mars mission, locking four brave volunteers inside a "Mars simulator" as part of the CHAPEA 1 project. This marks the first of three simulations the volunteers will undergo.

The four individuals chosen for this challenging endeavor are Kelly Haston, a research scientist; Ross Brockwell, a structural engineer; Nathan Jones, an emergency medicine physician; and Anca Selariu, a US Navy microbiologist. Their mission inside the simulator will span an incredible 378 days.

Similar to actual astronauts on Mars, the volunteers will face rigorous challenges. They will be responsible for completing tasks assigned by NASA while also managing daily chores such as cooking, washing, making beds, and exercising. Additionally, they will practice farming on simulated Martian soil, cultivating their own crops.

Before commencing the mission, Grace Douglas, the mission leader, conveyed her well wishes to the volunteers, expressing gratitude for their dedication to exploration. Kelly Haston, who will assume command during the mission, highlighted the crew's immense passion for space exploration and their excitement for the journey ahead. She stated, "We are a fantastic group of scientists working together to make CHAPEA 1 a reality."

Within the Mars simulator, various spaces have been recreated, including private rooms, a kitchen, a medical care room, a recreation area, an exercise space, a workspace, a farming section, and bathrooms. All of these areas have been meticulously designed within a confined space measuring 1,700 square feet.
