Nana Patekar last rites: When and where will the funeral of the veteran actor take place in Maharastra

The Maharashtra government has decided to accord veteran actor Nana Patekar a funeral with state honours following his death at the age of 75. The decision was announced by Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, who cited Patekar’s contribution to Marathi theatre as well as Marathi and Hindi cinema.

Patekar died early Thursday, October 8, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. He was found unconscious at his home and taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him with CPR for around 45 minutes. He was declared dead at about 5:20 am, according to Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital.

Nana Patekar last rites: Venue and timing

While the Maharashtra government has confirmed that Patekar will receive a state-honours funeral. The last rites will take place on Thursday at the late actor's farmhouse on the outskirts of Pune. The body will be brought fromm Goa to Pune at 5 PM and will be dispalyed for the fans to pay their respects.


The announcement of state honours follows the actor’s decades-long contribution to Marathi theatre and cinema as well as Hindi films. Further information regarding the funeral arrangements is expected to be issued by the authorities and his family.

Nana Patekar’s career in Marathi and Hindi cinema

Patekar began his acting career with the 1978 film Gaman and went on to become one of the prominent performers in both Marathi and Hindi cinema. His filmography includes Parinda, Prahaar, Angaar, Krantiveer, Tiranga, Khamoshi: The Musical and Ab Tak Chhappan, among several other films.

He continued to work in films in recent years. His later projects included Housefull 5, while he also appeared as a police officer in Vishal Bhardwaj’s O'Romeo, starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri. He also had a cameo in Subedar, featuring Anil Kapoor and Radhika Madan.


Patekar was known not only as an actor but also as a director and writer. His work across mainstream and critically acclaimed cinema established him as a major figure in Indian film.

Nana Patekar and his connection with the Indian Army

Patekar also had a notable association with the Indian Army, including during the Kargil conflict in 1999.

In August that year, he was posted as an honorary captain and served in conflict areas including Dras, Kupwara, Baramulla, Sopore and Mughalpura. He had sought permission to serve with the Army and personally approached then Defence Minister George Fernandes for approval.

His military association predated the Kargil conflict. While preparing for Prahaar, a film he also directed, Patekar spent three years training with the Maratha Light Infantry and developed national-level shooting skills.

His involvement with the armed forces became another distinctive part of his public life alongside his work in cinema and theatre.
