Mysterious underground sounds are being reported at Hasori village in Latur district of Maharashtra, causing a lot of concern among people there.

Reports said the sounds were being heard since September 6, prompting the district administration to ask eperts to go and study it.

The village in Nilanga tehsil is located 28 km from Killari where a deadly earthquake killed 9,700 people in 1993. But officials said no seismic activity was recorded in the area in the recent past.

Latur district collector Prithviraj B P visited the village on Tuesday and appealed to the people there not to panic. Experts from the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism to visit the village to study the phenomenon. A team of experts from Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University of Nanded is set to visit the village on Wednesday.

Latur witnessed a 6.2 quake on September 30, 1993, which flattened 10 villages and claimed 9,700 lives. The earthquake's hypocenter was around 10 km deep – relatively shallow – allowing shock waves to cause more damage. The place does not lie on a plate boundary, and what exactly caused the cause was inconclusively debated.

Reports from Latur did not specify how loud the noises were or how often they occurred. Since officials have not recorded any seismic activity they feel it is too early to be very concerned.
