“Mutual funds sahi hai.” — We’ve all heard this slogan. But one X (formerly Twitter) user begs to differ. According to him, his mutual fund returns pale in comparison to what he earned from sheep farming.

The user claimed in a post that he had invested the same amount in both mutual funds and sheep farming. After three years, his sheep farming venture allegedly yielded 10x returns, while his mutual fund investment hadn’t even doubled.

“Truth that mutual fund guys and finance influencers don’t want you to know,” he wrote.

However, the post did not include any proof or data to support the claims.

The tweet quickly went viral, with many users reacting humorously. “Selling all my mutual funds right away. God bless you and this sheep farmer. My kids will forever be grateful,” joked one user.

Another chimed in with a more practical take: “That’s business, not investment. Business can give 10x returns, but it only works at smaller scales. You can’t grow from 100 sheep to 10,000 easily — but you can scale investments worth ?50 crore.”

A poultry business owner also weighed in: “Comparing MFs with sheep farming isn’t fair. Mutual funds have fixed expense ratios, while sheep farming has unpredictable costs. Both involve risk. If you really want a fair comparison, try sheep vs poultry. I run a small poultry setup under contract with Venky’s — they manage chicks, feed, and vets. Returns come faster, monitoring is easier, and since it’s a chain model, you don’t face market risks alone.”

Meanwhile, data paints a different long-term picture. According to ETMutualFunds, all 36 equity mutual funds that have completed 25 years turned investors into crorepatis with a monthly SIP of just Rs 10,000 over the period.
