A Mumbai-based woman has gone viral after claiming she successfully got an “illegal” housing society rule revoked, triggering widespread discussion online about resident rights and arbitrary restrictions.

In a video shared on Instagram, Kashish Kapoor detailed how her housing society allegedly barred vehicles from entering for pick-ups and drop-offs, forcing residents to walk nearly 300 metres from the main gate. She said the restriction posed safety concerns, especially for those returning late at night.

Dispute over society rule

Kapoor said the issue came to light when she witnessed a woman being stopped at the gate, with security personnel refusing entry to her vehicle. When questioned, guards cited a new rule banning such access, though Kapoor claimed no official notice had been displayed to residents.

She explained that the society had two gates, with the closer rear gate shutting at 10 pm, leaving residents to use the main gate located at a distance. Kapoor argued that the arrangement was impractical and unsafe, particularly for women arriving home late at night.

Unsure about the legality of the rule, Kapoor said she contacted Mumbai Police, who informed her that such a restriction was not valid and even offered assistance to address the issue.

Escalation and resolution

Kapoor then raised the matter with her landlord, who supported her objection and termed the rule unreasonable. Acting on his advice, she drafted a detailed email highlighting concerns around safety and convenience, which was forwarded to the society’s managing committee.

Within three days, Kapoor said the rule was withdrawn, and vehicles were once again allowed inside the premises.

Social media reactions

The incident has sparked significant engagement online, with many users praising Kapoor’s approach and calling it a win for residents. Some highlighted her calm and logical handling of the issue, while others shared similar experiences with housing society regulations.
