With strengthening westerly winds and the advancement of the monsoon, the IMD has forecast widespread to fairly widespread rainfall activity accompanied by thunderstorms across parts of Maharashtra over the coming days.

Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies on Tuesday as pre-monsoon showers accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms affected several parts of the city and surrounding areas.

According to ANI, parts of Lonavala received rainfall this morning amid changing weather conditions across the region.

IMD Alert

Meanwhile, residents of Mumbai and Raigad have been advised to remain alert after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), citing the India Meteorological Department (IMD), issued a fresh nowcast warning on Tuesday. The alert forecasts thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated locations.

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai and Raigad from 7:00 am on Tuesday, which will remain in force for the next three hours. The weather department has warned of sudden thunderstorms, lightning activity and intense rain spells during this period.

Monsoon to reach Mumbai soon

Earlier, the IMD said the Southwest Monsoon had advanced into several parts of Maharashtra and is likely to cover more areas, including Mumbai, within the next 48 hours.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the monsoon has further progressed into parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra and Telangana, while covering the remaining parts of Karnataka and extending into parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar.

The weather office said conditions remain favourable for the further advancement of the monsoon into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, additional areas of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, the remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, and more regions of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar over the next two days.

With strengthening westerly winds and the continued advance of the monsoon, the IMD has forecast widespread rainfall activity accompanied by thunderstorms across parts of Maharashtra over the coming days.

Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across the Konkan region between June 22 and June 26. The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall over parts of Madhya Maharashtra during the same period.

For Marathwada, thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds and light to moderate rainfall are expected between June 22 and June 24.

The IMD has issued a warning for fishermen along the South Maharashtra-Goa coast, advising them not to venture into the sea from June 22 to June 26 due to squally weather conditions. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph.

The department cautioned that heavy rainfall could trigger localised flooding in low-lying and urban areas, flash floods, disruptions to road, rail, air and ferry services, damage to standing crops and horticulture, and rough sea conditions along the coast.

Residents have been advised to follow traffic advisories, avoid vulnerable structures, stay away from water bodies during thunderstorms and seek shelter in safe locations during adverse weather conditions.
