Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding during intense monsoon spells.

Schools and colleges closed in Mumbai

In view of the weather warning, educational institutions across Mumbai have been declared closed for Tuesday.

The decision covers:

• Municipal schools
• Private schools
• Colleges

The move has been taken as a precaution to ensure the safety of students amid forecasts of heavy rain and strong winds.

BMC advisory for Mumbai residents

The BMC has appealed to citizens to stay indoors unless travel is unavoidable.

• Stay away from trees, electric poles, hoardings and dilapidated structures.

• Stay away from the seafront and waterlogged locations.

Mumbai rains: Heavy showers lashed the city on Monday

Mumbai witnessed very heavy rainfall on Monday before the intensity reduced somewhat during the afternoon. However, strong winds continued to trigger incidents of treefalls in several parts of the city.

According to the BMC's monsoon report, rainfall recorded between 8 am and 6 pm was:

• Mumbai city: 28.2 mm
• Eastern suburbs: 61.75 mm
• Western suburbs: 65.45 mm

The civic body also said that during the previous 48 hours, rainfall reached:

• 300 mm in Mumbai city
• 380 mm in the eastern suburbs
• 345 mm in the western suburbs

Maharashtra government advises work from home

In view of the continuing adverse weather, the Maharashtra government advised private establishments to allow employees to work from home wherever possible.

It also declared a half-day for employees working in non-essential government and semi-government offices to reduce travel during the heavy rain.

Train services remain affected

Heavy rainfall and flooding continued to disrupt public transport across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

On the railway network:

• Western Railway suburban services remained affected between Vasai Road and Dahanu due to waterlogging.
• Central Railway suburban services between Karjat and Khopoli remained suspended till late Monday after a ballast washout.
• Long-distance trains to and from Gujarat continued to face cancellations, diversions and delays because of waterlogging between Virar and Palghar.
• Services on the Mumbai-Pune route also remained disrupted due to landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala ghat section.

The disruptions affected thousands of passengers as several trains were cancelled, diverted, rescheduled or stranded.
