Mumbai, Thane, Palghar weather update: IMD issues orange alert as heavy rains lash financial capital; check forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai on Thursday, warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places. Neighbouring districts, including Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri, are also under an orange alert, with very heavy rainfall likely over the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD's Nowcast warning, Mumbai will remain under an orange alert until 10 am. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather alerts across Maharashtra, with heavy rainfall expected in several regions on July 23.

In the Konkan region, an orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, with heavy rain likely in parts of the region.


In north Maharashtra, rain accompanied by thundershowers has been forecast for Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon and Nashik districts. A yellow alert has been issued for these districts, while Nashik Ghatmatha is under an orange alert.

In western Maharashtra, light to moderate rain is likely over Pune, Satara, Sangli, Ahilyanagar and Kolhapur. The IMD has issued a red alert for the Pune Ghatmatha area and an orange alert for the Satara Ghatmatha region. Solapur is expected to receive light rainfall.

In the Marathwada region, moderate rainfall is likely in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Hingoli districts. Jalna, Parbhani, Beed and Nanded are expected to receive light to moderate rain, while Latur and Dharashiv are likely to witness light rainfall.

In Vidarbha, a yellow alert has been issued for Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal and Washim districts due to the possibility of rainfall.

Will schools remain open?

The Palghar district administration has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges and other educational institutions on Thursday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall.

In Mumbai, however, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has clarified that educational institutions will remain open and no holiday has been announced

Tide update:

According to the Port of Mumbai, the city will witness two high tides and two low tides on Thursday. The first low tide is expected at 12:13 am with a height of 1.59 metres, followed by a high tide at 7:28 am reaching 3.22 metres. The second low tide is forecast at 1:32 pm with a height of 2.64 metres, while the evening high tide is expected at 6:22 pm, reaching 3.06 metres. The tides fall under the neap tide phase.
