Mumbai rains: IMD issues Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall, winds up to 90 kmph; citizens urged to stay indoors

Citing IMD, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and avoid venturing into vulnerable locations. Citizens have been asked to stay away from trees, dilapidated buildings, hoardings, electric poles and other potentially hazardous structures. The civic body also advised people not to park vehicles under trees and to avoid visiting the seashore and low-lying areas during the adverse weather.

The IMD has forecast continuous spells of rain across Mumbai city and suburbs, with very heavy rainfall expected at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall likely at isolated locations. Occasional gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph are also expected during the day.
The BMC appealed to residents not to believe rumours and to rely only on official advisories and alerts issued by the administration and disaster management authorities. In case of emergencies, citizens have been asked to contact the BMC's helpline number 1916 for immediate assistance.

The civic body said nearly 15,000 officers and employees from the BMC and various government agencies have been deployed across Mumbai and are working round the clock to respond to any emergencies. Senior officials are continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating response measures.
Mumbai High-Tide Alert
Authorities have also cautioned residents about the day's tidal activity. A high tide of 4.08 metres is expected at 3:56 pm on Monday, while another high tide of 3.44 metres is forecast at 4:38 am on Tuesday. The latest Red Alert comes after heavy rainfall and strong winds battered Mumbai on Sunday. The BMC reported 142 incidents of trees and branches falling across the city as wind speeds touched 72-75 kmph. Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide had directed the entire civic administration to remain on high alert following the IMD's forecast of continued heavy rain.
Holiday for offices, schools and colleges
Earlier, the BMC had declared a holiday for all government, municipal and private schools and colleges in Mumbai on Monday, July 6, as a precautionary measure amid the worsening weather conditions.The civic body had earlier said 150-170 mm of rainfall was recorded across different parts of Greater Mumbai in the 24 hours ending Sunday evening. Despite the heavy downpour and a 4.19-metre high tide recorded on Sunday afternoon, there were no reports of major waterlogging, while suburban railway services continued to operate normally.
According to BMC rainfall data, Mumbai city received an average of 153 mm of rain during the 24-hour period between 5 pm on July 4 and 5 pm on July 5. The eastern suburbs recorded 121 mm of rainfall, while the western suburbs received 93 mm.
The BMC attributed the limited disruption to its pre-monsoon preparedness measures, stating that the Parks Department had surveyed 1,62,676 trees, pruned more than 1.03 lakh trees and removed 648 dangerous trees before the onset of the monsoon.
