Mumbai presses pause
Rain doesn't usually stop a metropolis like Mumbai. But this spell has been different. Days of non-stop downpour and waterlogged streets pushed authorities to choose caution over routine. The University of Mumbai said student safety was the only thing on its mind when it made the call to postpone exams.Mumbai schools shut, offices stay open
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already set the tone earlier in the day, ordering all government, private, and civic body-run schools and colleges across Mumbai to stay shut. The trigger was an orange alert from the IMD, warning of heavy rain paired with strong winds. Offices, though, got no such holiday. The BMC made it clear that government and private workplaces would function as usual, rain or no rain. The shutdown didn't stop at Mumbai's borders. Thane District Collector Shrikrishnath Panchal ordered anganwadis, balwadis, and primary and secondary schools in the district to remain closed. Navi Mumbai joined the list too, with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) shutting all schools on Monday. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde had a simple message for residents: stay indoors unless it's truly unavoidable.
Trees down, winds up
The numbers tell their own story. The BMC recorded 142 incidents of trees or branches crashing down across Mumbai, as gusty winds touching 72-75 kmph tore through the city alongside heavy rain. Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide didn't wait around. She instructed the entire civic administration to stay on high alert through Monday, with the IMD forecasting more heavy rain ahead. What started as a rainy Monday has turned into a citywide exercise in caution. From a university calling off exams to municipal bodies shutting schools and civic chiefs bracing for more bad weather, Mumbai's message is unified: when the sky turns hostile, safety comes before schedules. For now, students, parents, and office-goers alike are left watching the clouds, waiting to see what the week brings next.
