Mumbai shocker: Couple delivers baby on moving sleeper bus, throws newborn out to death

A 19-year-old woman delivered a baby whilst travelling on a sleeper coach bus in Maharashtra's Parbhani, according to a report of PTI. She and a man, who claimed to be her spouse, however, discarded the newborn through the window, resulting in the infant's death, PTI claimed citing police reports.

The incident took place at approximately 6.30 am on Tuesday on the Pathri-Selu Road. The matter surfaced when a vigilant citizen noticed an object wrapped in cloth being thrown from the bus, as stated by an official.

"A woman, identified as Ritika Dhere, was travelling to Parbhani from Pune along with Altaf Shaikh, who claimed to be her husband, in the sleeper coach bus of Sant Prayag Travels.


During their journey, the woman, who was pregnant, went into labour and gave birth to a baby boy. However, the couple wrapped the newborn in a piece of cloth and threw him out of the vehicle," he said.

The vehicle operator noticed the incident and questioned about it. Shaikh explained that his wife had been sick due to travel-induced nausea, according to the official.

A concerned citizen discovered the infant upon inspection and immediately contacted police through their emergency number 112.

A local police patrol subsequently halted the bus. Following vehicle inspection and initial investigation, the authorities detained both the woman and Shaikh.

The pair stated they abandoned the infant due to their inability to provide care. The newborn succumbed to injuries sustained from the fall.

Police reports indicate that whilst Dhere and Shaikh, both from Parbhani, had resided in Pune for 18 months, they failed to provide documentation supporting their claimed marital status.

The authorities ensured the woman received medical attention after their arrest.

The couple faces charges at Pathri police station under section 94 (3), (5) of BNS for concealing birth through secret disposal of a deceased body.

The accused have received formal notice, and investigations continue.
