Are schools, colleges and offices closed in Mumbai on July 9?

No. As of the latest official update, schools, colleges and offices are expected to remain open on Thursday, July 9, as neither the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) nor the Maharashtra government has announced any fresh closure.

Educational institutions and workplaces are expected to function as usual unless a new notification is issued based on changing weather conditions.

Parents, students and employees are advised to check updates from their respective schools, colleges and employers before beginning their journey.

IMD issues Yellow Alert for Mumbai and Thane

The IMD has placed Mumbai and Thane under a Yellow Alert for Thursday.

The forecast includes:
  • Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning
  • Light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy spells
  • Squally winds during thunderstorm activity
  • Cloudy skies throughout the day

While rainfall is expected to be less intense than earlier this week, localised waterlogging and temporary traffic disruptions remain possible, especially during heavy showers.

Rainfall expected to ease, but caution remains necessary

The weather department has indicated that rainfall activity is likely to reduce gradually from July 9 after the recent spell of heavy to very heavy rain.

Even so, intermittent showers and thunderstorms could continue across parts of Mumbai, Thane and neighbouring areas. Residents are advised to remain alert for slippery roads, reduced visibility and brief waterlogging in low-lying locations.

BMC continues emergency preparedness

Although weather conditions have shown signs of improvement, the BMC has kept its disaster management machinery on standby.

Emergency teams remain deployed across flood-prone locations, while dewatering pumps and other equipment continue to be positioned in vulnerable areas. Civic authorities are also prepared to respond quickly to incidents such as fallen trees, waterlogging, electrical faults and building-related emergencies if required.

Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to follow official advisories.

Don't rely on rumours about holidays

Authorities have advised residents not to believe unverified messages circulating on social media regarding school or office closures.

Instead, parents, students and employees should monitor updates from:
  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
  • India Meteorological Department (IMD)
  • Maharashtra School Education Department
  • Official school and college communication channels
  • Employers and workplace notifications

Will Mumbai declare a holiday if weather worsens?

At present, there is no official holiday for schools, colleges or offices on July 9.

However, the situation remains weather-dependent. If rainfall intensifies overnight or the IMD upgrades its weather warning, civic authorities may review the situation and issue fresh advisories.

Until any official announcement is made, educational institutions and offices are expected to operate normally.
