Heavy overnight rain has thrown railway operations into disarray across the Mumbai region on Monday, with landslides in the Bhor Ghat section snapping the vital Mumbai-Pune rail link even as the city's suburban local trains continue to run, albeit with delays. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has an orange alert in force for Mumbai and has additionally flagged a red nowcast warning for the next few hours, cautioning of intense rain and gusty winds. Here's a live-style roundup of everything happening on the tracks right now.

Mumbai-Pune Route Suspended After Landslides

Long-distance train services between Mumbai and Pune came to a halt in the early hours of Monday after heavy rain triggered landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala stretch of the Bhor Ghat section — one of the most engineering-intensive parts of the entire route.

Central Railway officials said the first landslide came down near Thakurwadi, followed by a second slide on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill at around 3.05 am. The Bhor Ghat (Khandala Ghat) section runs on three parallel tracks, the Up line toward Mumbai, the Down line toward Pune, and a middle line, and all three have been affected by the debris.

With the ghat section blocked, Central Railway has had to cancel, divert, regulate or reschedule a string of services. Trains affected include several CSMT-Pune and Pune-CSMT Indrayani and Intercity services, the Solapur Intercity Express in both directions, and marquee long-distance trains such as the Deccan Express, the Deccan Queen, the Pragati Express and the Sinhagad Express. A CSMT-Dhule Express service has also been hit.

No confirmed timeline yet for when the ghat section will reopen — restoration work is ongoing, and updates are expected through the day as clearance progresses.

Mumbai Suburban Locals: Running, With Minor Delays

The good news for daily commuters is that Mumbai's suburban local train network, the city's real lifeline, has largely held up despite the intensity of the rain.

As of the morning update, services across all four Central Railway corridors were operational:

  • Main Line: Running 6-8 minutes behind schedule
  • Harbour Line: Running about 4 minutes behind schedule
  • Trans-Harbour Line: Operating as per schedule
  • Uran-Belapur Line: Operating as per schedule
Western Railway suburban services were also running through the morning, though commuters should expect the usual monsoon-related slowdowns in waterlogging-prone stretches.

Advice for commuters: Keep some buffer time built into your commute, and check live running status through Central Railway/Western Railway's official channels or apps like NTES before heading to the station, since the situation can change quickly if water levels rise further.

Mumbai Rain Mayham

Sunday's intense rainfall, which set the stage for Monday's disruption, also caused other incidents in the city, a portion of a chawl collapsed in Mankhurd, and a separate treefall incident was reported, in addition to the near hour-long suspension of flight operations at Mumbai airport. The BMC has since issued a red nowcast warning, cautioning residents about intense spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds of 50-60 kmph over the next three hours.

With schools and colleges already declared shut across Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar and the IMD flagging continued heavy rainfall, railway authorities are urging passengers to treat today as a day to double-check their train status before travelling — especially anyone with a booking on the Mumbai-Pune long-distance route.

(This is a live, developing situation. Train timings and cancellations can change rapidly — always verify your specific train's status through Indian Railways' official NTES portal/app or Central Railway and Western Railway's social media handles before heading to the station.)
