Several parts of Mumbai were hit by heavy rainfall on Friday, causing delays in local train services and traffic congestion on major roads across the city.
According to Central Railway officials, while suburban train services remain operational on all routes, the Main Line is running 10–12 minutes late, and Harbour Line trains are delayed by around 7–8 minutes. The delays are attributed to reduced visibility and safety precautions, with trains running at slower speeds.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast alert at 10 a.m., predicting moderate to intense rainfall over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Pune in the next few hours.
Over the last 24 hours, Mumbai experienced light to moderate showers. As per the BMC’s rainfall update as of 8 a.m. on July 25:
- Island City recorded 29.40 mm of rain
- Eastern Suburbs saw 29.44 mm
- Western Suburbs received 18.88 mm
The showers led to traffic jams on several key routes. The Western Express Highway reported heavy congestion near NESCO, Goregaon East, while on the Eastern Express Highway, bottlenecks were observed near Vikhroli–Chheda Nagar and Amar Mahal–Sion stretches.
Additionally, the Andheri subway, which had been cleared of earlier flooding and reopened, was once again shut due to fresh waterlogging.
Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution and plan their journeys carefully, as intermittent heavy rainfall is expected to persist throughout the day.
Weather advisory for Mumbai residents
Authorities have issued a cautionary alert urging residents to remain vigilant as continuous heavy rainfall combined with strong winds could result in traffic delays, disruption in public transport, and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Those heading outdoors are advised to carry umbrellas, wear waterproof footwear, and steer clear of routes known to flood easily. Due to high humidity levels, staying indoors may also be uncomfortable; the use of fans, air conditioners, or dehumidifiers is suggested for relief.
Separately, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has updated its high-wave warning, predicting wave heights between 3.8 and 4.7 metres along coastal areas, including Mumbai and its suburbs, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar, and Sindhudurg.
