Mumbai, Pune weather this week: IMD issues yellow warning as thunderstorms hit Maharashtra; SpiceJet issues advisory

Mumbai and Pune are set for another round of unsettled weather on June 3 and June 4, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall across several parts of Maharashtra. Both cities, along with nearby districts like Thane and Palghar, are under a yellow alert, signaling short but intense spells of rain and gusty winds.

The wet spell comes as pre-monsoon activity strengthens across the Konkan and western Maharashtra belt, bringing sudden showers after days of heat and humidity.

Mumbai Weather: Showers Likely Till June 4

Mumbai woke up to intermittent pre-monsoon showers earlier this week, and the trend is expected to continue through June 4.

The IMD has indicated:

Thunderstorms and light to moderate rain
Cloudy skies with brief intense spells
Continued humid conditions despite rainfall

Residents in Mumbai and the suburbs may see short bursts of rain rather than continuous downpours, but sudden thunderstorms remain likely.

SpiceJet Advisory: Flight Delays Possible in Mumbai

Air travel may also be affected due to unstable weather conditions in Mumbai with SpiceJet issuing a travel advisory stating:

“#WeatherUpdate: Due to bad weather (Rain) in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via http://spicejet.com/#status.”



Passengers are advised to check flight updates before heading to the airport, as intermittent thunderstorms can impact runway operations, the airline said in a tweet on Wednesday.

IMD's Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Pune

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Pune for June 3 and continuing into June 4, warning of unstable weather conditions.

Forecast highlights include:

Thunderstorms with lightning
Light to moderate rainfall
Gusty winds around 30–40 kmph in isolated areas
Sudden weather changes during afternoon and evening hours

Meteorologists say the system is part of a larger pre-monsoon activity belt currently active over Maharashtra.

Pune Weather: Storms, Lightning and Rain Till June 5

Pune is also under a yellow alert from June 3 to June 5, with weather experts predicting thunderstorm activity to persist for several days.

Expected conditions:

Thunderstorms with lightning
Light rain showers in many areas
Gusty winds during late afternoon and evening
Partly cloudy to overcast skies through the period

Weather officials say the system is part of active pre-monsoon convection over central Maharashtra, which often triggers sudden rain bursts in Pune and surrounding regions.

Thane and Palghar Also in Rain Zone

The IMD warning extends beyond the two major cities. Thane and Palghar are expected to receive:

Isolated thunderstorms
Moderate rainfall spells
Strong winds in pockets

These districts are likely to experience similar weather patterns as Mumbai, especially during evening hours when storm activity tends to peak.

Meteorologists attribute the current instability to strengthening pre-monsoon systems over the Arabian Sea and inland Maharashtra.
