Mumbai: Children play cricket on a waterlogged road following heavy rainfall, in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, warning of moderate to intense spells of rain over the next few hours, while the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Authorities have also warned of a 4.19-metre high tide expected in the afternoon.

According to the IMD's nowcast warning issued at 7:00 am IST on July 5, moderate to intense rainfall is very likely at isolated places in Mumbai and Raigad over the next three hours. The weather department advised people to take necessary precautions.

The BMC, in a post on X, said the IMD has issued a Red Alert for the Greater Mumbai region for Sunday, July 5, 2026, and has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across the city.

The civic body also warned that a 4.19-metre high tide is expected at 3:22 pm, which could worsen flooding in low-lying areas if heavy rain continues.

"Citizens should remain vigilant and step out only if absolutely necessary. They should strictly follow instructions issued by the administration from time to time," the BMC said. It also asked residents to call its emergency helpline 1916 in case of any emergency.

Mumbai receives 250-300 mm rain in 24 hours

On Saturday, the BMC said several parts of Mumbai received 250-300 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, accounting for 74% of the city's average July rainfall and 25% of its annual seasonal rainfall.

Despite continuous rain and high tides, normal life largely continued across the city. Officials reported waterlogging at around 10 low-lying locations and 18 incidents of tree falls, but no casualties were reported.

The civic body said around 10,000 officers and employees from the BMC and other agencies have been deployed across Mumbai, while senior officials are closely monitoring the situation.

Mumbai typically receives around 2,318 mm of rainfall annually, with nearly 800 mm falling in July. Over the past four days, the city has already recorded around 588 mm of rain, equivalent to 74% of the month's average.

The BMC also said Vikhroli recorded the highest rainfall of 316 mm in the last 24 hours, while a 4.26-metre high tide was recorded on July 4. Despite the heavy rainfall and tidal conditions, suburban and city rail services continued to operate normally.

Rain till July 7

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors unless absolutely essential, as heavy rainfall is being recorded across the state, particularly in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and parts of the Pune and Nashik districts.

According to meteorological reports, an offshore trough, a long stretch of low pressure at sea level, has formed extending from the Maharashtra coast down to the Karnataka coast. This system is expected to persist throughout the week.

As a result, the IMD predicts that rainfall intensity will surge significantly between July 4 and July 7 across Konkan and the ghat (mountainous) areas of Madhya Maharashtra, he said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "Red Alert" for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts for Saturday and Sunday, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, he mentioned.

Mumbai has been placed on a 'Red Alert' by the weather department following relentless rain and high-velocity winds, which have led to a spike in tree-felling incidents. Just earlier this week on Tuesday, a school student tragically lost their life in Chembur when a pipal tree crashed onto a school bus, putting public focus squarely on monsoon safety.
