Mumbai’s public transport network is set for a significant upgrade as Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 9 begin partial operations from April 3. This long-awaited development is expected to improve connectivity across key suburban regions and offer much-needed relief to daily commuters.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that the initial phases of both metro lines will soon be open to the public following final safety checks and trial runs.

Mumbai Metro Line 2B: Key Route and Stations

Mumbai Metro Line 2B, part of the Yellow Line corridor, will initially operate between DN Nagar and Mandale (Mankhurd). This stretch will include five important stations:

• Mandale
• Mankhurd
• BSNL Metro
• Shivaji Chowk
• Diamond Garden

This route is expected to strengthen east-west connectivity by linking major areas such as Andheri West, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Kurla, and Chembur. Once fully completed, the 23.6 km elevated corridor will feature 20 stations, significantly improving travel across densely populated zones.

Mumbai Metro Line 9: Improving Northern Connectivity

Mumbai Metro Line 9 will begin operations on a 4.5 km stretch between Dahisar and Mira Road. The initial phase will include the following stations:

• Dahisar
• Pandurang Wadi
• Mira Gaon
• Kashigaon

This line is expected to benefit commuters in the rapidly developing Mira-Bhayandar region, providing a faster and more reliable alternative to road travel.

Mumbai Metro Launch Event and Delays Explained

The inauguration ceremony for Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 9 will be held on April 3, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar expected to attend.

The launch had been delayed since late 2025 due to multiple factors, including election-related code of conduct restrictions, budget sessions, and necessary safety approvals for system integration.

How Mumbai Metro Will Ease Traffic and Travel Time

Transport experts believe the partial opening of Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 9 will bring noticeable improvements in daily commuting:

• Reduced congestion on major roads like the Eastern Express Highway and SV Road
• Less dependence on overcrowded suburban trains
• Faster travel between eastern and western suburbs
• Improved connectivity in high-density residential and commercial areas

Line 9, in particular, is expected to ease traffic between Dahisar check naka and Bhayandar, a route known for frequent traffic jams.
