The first metro viaduct that will run over a water body in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and link Thane to Kalyan through Bhiwandi has been completed. The last span of the 550-metre-long Kasheli Creek Metro viaduct was finished on Sunday as part of Phase I of Mumbai Metro Line 5. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is the project developer for Metro Line 5.

The authorities have started work on the final portion of the Kasheli Creek bridge. It will be part of the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan stretch of the bridge which is 15 metres above the river and has 13 piers. The bridge construction began in May 2021 as a part of a 12.811-kilometer stretch of the Mumbai Metro line.

Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan are served by Orange Line 5. The route spans 24.9 kilometres and includes 17 stops. The project's overall cost is Rs 8416 crores.

Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan are Mumbai's eastern suburbs and popular residential areas. Kapurbawdi, Balkum Naka, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, Gopal Nagar, Temghar, Rajnouli Village, Govegaon MIDC, Kongaon, Durgadi Fort, Sahajanand Chowk, and Kalyan Railway Station are among the stations on the Thane-Kalyan line.

The MMRDA authorised the line in 2016. A year later, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved it.

To avoid the demolition of some structures, parts of the route are likely to go underground. The line will link to Metro Line 4, which runs from Wadala to Kasarvadavli. It will connect to the projected Metro Line 12 from Kalyan to Taloja. It will also link to the Central Railway.
