Mumbai: Mentally ill girl raped by multiple men over months, 16 rounds of DNA test find father one of the assailants

Mumbai Police on Thursday arrested the father of a 20-year-old woman with mental illness after DNA analysis confirmed that he had impregnated her, officials said.

The disturbing case surfaced in 2025 when hospital authorities discovered that the non-verbal woman was five months pregnant during a medical examination.

Case Came to Light During Hospital Visit

The woman had been admitted to Mumbai’s Cama & Albless Hospital in September after she complained of abdominal pain to her grandmother. During the medical check-up, doctors found that she was pregnant.


Hospital officials promptly informed the police, leading to the registration of a case and the launch of a detailed investigation.

DNA Tests Conducted on Multiple Suspects

As part of the probe, police collected blood and DNA samples from nearly 16 individuals, including the woman’s father. The samples were matched with the genetic material of the foetus.

A forensic report received on January 27 confirmed a single positive match — her father.

Counselling and Earlier Arrests

During counselling sessions, the woman reportedly indicated that she had been sexually assaulted by multiple individuals in the past. She later disclosed her father’s involvement as well, according to police.

Based on earlier statements and evidence, officers had initially arrested two other individuals — an adult male and a minor — in connection with the case.

Timeline of the Alleged Assault

Police believe that the sexual assault occurred between March and September 21 last year. Following the forensic confirmation identifying the accused, a case was formally registered the next day.

The investigation into the matter remains ongoing.
