A shocking discovery at a daycare centre in Mumbai's Malad has left residents stunned after police recovered the body of a 78-year-old man from a freezer, where it had allegedly been preserved for more than four years, a NBT report stated. The body was found at a daycare centre in Konkani Pada, Kurar Village, after residents complained of a foul smell coming from the premises on Monday evening.

According to police, the man died of cancer on June 9, 2022. His body was allegedly kept in the freezer in the hope that he could be brought back to life, police sources said. The discovery has raised questions about how the body remained inside the centre for so long and whether the authorities had inspected the premises properly.

Why was the 78-year-old man's body kept in a freezer?

According to police sources, the deceased had a son who lives in Mumbai and a daughter who resides in the US. The daughter was reportedly deeply attached to her father and believed in the concept of rebirth. Police sources said she and her brother allegedly decided to preserve their father's body, hoping he could be revived.


The family was reportedly paying around ₹1.60 lakh every month to keep the body preserved at the centre. The relatives have also provided the police with the man's death certificate and documents submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), according to police sources.

Officials are examining these records as part of the investigation. The circumstances under which the body was stored and the arrangements made with the centre are also being looked into.

BMC had sealed the daycare centre three months ago

The centre is located in Konkani Pada, in Mumbai's Kurar Village area of Malad. According to sources quoted by NBT, the BMC had sealed the premises around three months before the discovery. The recovery of the body has prompted questions about the inspection carried out during the sealing process.

Former corporator Vinod Mishra questioned why the premises had not been thoroughly checked when civic officials sealed the centre. It remains to be established whether the authorities were aware that the body was being stored inside the freezer.

Foul smell led residents to alert police

Residents began noticing a strong, unusual smell in the area on Sunday night. Initially, some suspected that a rat or another animal had died nearby. However, the stench grew stronger throughout Monday, prompting someone to alert the police. A team from Kurar police station subsequently reached the centre and began searching the premises. During the inspection, officers discovered the body inside a freezer, leaving them shocked.

Cooper Hospital doctors consulted over preserved body

The police are now seeking assistance from specialist doctors at Mumbai's Cooper Hospital to understand the condition of the body and the preservation method used. The investigation will also examine how the body was kept at the facility, the role of the centre's management and the circumstances surrounding its discovery.

The police have not yet disclosed the findings of the medical examination or clarified whether any legal violations occurred in connection with the preservation of the body.

Woman appoints lawyer to fight her case

The woman has reportedly appointed lawyers to represent her in the case. Meanwhile, Kurar police are carrying out a detailed investigation, looking into both the legal issues surrounding the preservation of the body and the family's circumstances and decisions.
