A 42-year-old businessman from Mumbai lost his life in a tragic road accident while out cycling—an activity he had just taken up to improve his fitness.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening along an unfinished stretch of Kalyan’s Ring Road. According to police, the man was struck by a speeding car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old. The impact threw him into the air before the vehicle fled the scene. The minor reportedly went into hiding but was tracked down and detained the following day.

An FIR has been registered under charges of rash and negligent driving, along with other serious, non-bailable offences. Police have also named the boy’s mother—who owns the car—as a co-accused, after it emerged that he had informed her before taking the vehicle. His father is a practising lawyer.

Investigators said the teenager briefly posted on social media after the crash, referring to it as a “small accident” and expressing concern about his father’s reaction. The post was later deleted.

The victim, identified as Srinivas Tandle, owned several garment shops in Kalyan. His brother revealed that he had borrowed a bicycle just days earlier and had only started cycling on the day of the accident.

CCTV footage from the area shows the car swerving at high speed before hitting Tandle and speeding away. Locals alerted the Khadakpada police, who rushed him to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The vehicle involved was later found parked at the residential complex where the minor lives, showing signs of minor damage.

Residents say the stretch has become a hotspot for reckless driving, with frequent reports of speeding and stunts. A similar accident had been reported less than a month ago. Locals and the victim’s family have called for stricter enforcement, improved road infrastructure, and safety measures such as speed breakers, barricades, and additional CCTV cameras.

The Ring Road project, being developed in phases by the MMRDA, has seen delays due to land acquisition issues, leaving parts of the road incomplete and vulnerable to misuse by motorists.
